About Egg Tempera
Artist's Statement
Through myths and symbols Annie aims to capture fragments of the divine in all; questing to find the otherness in our lives.
There is also the joy of painting in this beautiful medium that she hopes to share.
Method
Annie uses the Byzantine Float Technique of egg tempera painting. Egg yolk is mixed with natural pigments such as earth ochres, minerals, and precious stones such as Lapis Lazuli, Malachite and Azurite; painted on white gessoed wood panels.
The paint is applied as glazes over highlights to build up the colours, this gives a depth and richness plus luminosity to the colours and an other-worldliness to the subject.
This ancient style of painting has survived the centuries from the Roman / Egyptian Fayum mummy portraits, to the Byzantine period, through the Renaissance with Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Raphael and others, to the Pre-Raphaelites and into modern contemporary art.
